I initially had a consultation with Afras Khattak on November 8, 2022 regarding a family law matter. I was told the process would take approximately 6 months and cost around $4,000. Based on this, I signed the retainer agreement on November 14, 2022. On November 25, I was informed I would receive draft documents the following week. On December 15, I was told again that documents would be sent. After not receiving anything, I followed up on December 20. On December 23, I was invited to a Zoom meeting to review and sign documents. The biological father signed consent, and the mandatory 21-day waiting period ended on February 17, 2023. After this point, I received no updates. On March 7, I requested confirmation of what had actually been filed with the court. On March 15, I was finally sent proof that a guardianship application had been filed on March 8 — nearly four months after my retainer was signed. Prior to this, I had repeatedly called and left voicemails without receiving callbacks. Out of frustration, I left a simple one-star Google review. I was contacted almost immediately by Barry, who asked me to remove the review and assured me the case would be expedited. By this point, I had paid close to $8,000 total, yet very little progress had been made. I later contacted the courthouse myself and was informed that nothing had been properly submitted at that time. Barry acknowledged that the file had not been handled properly and stated that a refund would be issued due to the lack of work completed. Unfortunately, this refund never materialized. Follow-ups were delayed repeatedly, calls were not returned, and on one occasion the call was ended abruptly when I asked about the refund. It is now 2026 — nearly three years later — and the matter is still not completed. What was presented as a straightforward case with a 6-month timeline has experienced ongoing delays, incorrect filings, and poor communication. Based on my experience, I would strongly advise others to thoroughly research and ask for clear documentation and timelines before retaining this firm. My experience resulted in significant financial loss, emotional stress, and years of unnecessary delay.
